About the ignition system of a gasoline cars and other gasoline vehicles
The battery and the dynamo or alternator
The base for the ignition system is a battery combined with a dynamo or alternator connected to the poles of the battery. When the car is starting, the battery furnishes power to the ignition system and to an electric motor, the jumpstarter, that drives the car engine a few rounds until it has got fuel and air to work by itself. Once started, the dynamo or the alternator furnishes both power to igite the car, to reload the battery and to drive other electrical systems in the car.
A dynamo makes DC current, and alternators make AC (alternating current). Modern car use alternators, and the produced current is allways rectified before it goes to the battery and to the ignition system. One pole of the battery is connected to ground (the whole car body), while the other goes into the primary ciruit of the coil
The coil, capacitator and connection braker
The next components in the ignition system is a transformer, usually called a coil, combined with a capacitator and a connection braker. The coil consists of a primary winding of condutor wire, a much longer secundary winding and an iron kernel.
The entrance to the primary winding is connected to one pole of the battry. The other end of the winding is connected to the capacitator hwich is further connected to ground. And it is also connected to the connection braker which is also connected to ground. The secondary winding is connected to earth in one end and to the distributor at the other end.
The connection braker is an interrupter traditionally driven by the car engine that repetitively opens and shuts very fast. Modern interrupters are electronic computer driven devices.
How the primary and secondary coil circuits work
The primary circuit works in this way: When the connection braker is shut, current runs through the primary winding to the capasitator which is filled. This current increases and then decreases again. When the connection braker is open, the capacitator is reemptied. This makes a steadily changing current in the primary circuit then makes a changing mgnetic field in the coil which is also inforced by the iron kernel.
In the secunadry winding a voltage is induced due to the varying magnetic fields in the coil and hence also a current. This voltage is greater that that over the primary circuit, actually several thousands of volts hich is necessary to generate ignition sparks. The current from the secundary is drawn from earth, goes through the rest of the ignition system and from there to earth.
The secundary circuit current is sent to the distributer which successively shifts the current out to the right cylinder at the right time. The distributer is traditionally a device with a rotating anchor driven by the car engine that connects to several contacts points during each rotation. From each contact point there is a heavily insulated conductor to the spark plug on each cylinder. Modern distributers are electronic devices that are controlled by the engine computer.
The spark plugs
A spark plug consists of hollow screw, a hollow ceramic insulating plug placed partilally inside the screw and partially reaching up from the screw and a metallic conductor rod reaching from the top through the plug and out from the bottom of the plug. At the bottom there are one or more electrodes going out from the screw and from the central conductor with tips near to each other between which the sparks are generated by the high voltage.
The eire from the distributor is connected to the top of the central conductor with a hood that also has an outer insulating clothing reaching down around the insulating plug and sitting tightly around it. The current jumping over the electrode gap as a spark goes through the motor to ground and from there back to the secondary circuit of the coil.
About the ignition system of diesel engines
A diesel engine makes the blending of fuel and air ignite due to the heat produced by compression of air to a very little volume and high pressure. The fuel is injected right after the compression so that it all ignites at a right time. The motor or the motor part where the fuel comes in must however have a basal temeperature so that the temperature after compression gets high enough. During work the combustion of the fuel furnishes that basal heat.
When the motor shall start from scrach it msut be preheated, at least around the fuel injection point. To achieve this each cylinder has a mounted glow plug that preheats the engine. The glowplug i fitted into the motor just like a park plug. It conists of a resistor element through which current is running surrounded by an insultor and an outer housing that is screwed into the motor.
The glowplug uses DC current from the battery. Therefore transistor coils are not necessary in a diesel engine. Since the ignition time is controlled by the compresion time, there is neither use or any distributer.
