SOME ADVICES ABOUT WEB DESIGN
A. The purposes of the web page design
When you design your web domain, you should design it to support these functional purposes:
- The web should be easy for the visitors to navigate
- The purposes of each page should be clear for the visitor
- The pages should easily be picked up and indexed by the search engines.
- The search engine should conclude that your pages are important and valuable, so that they are listed early when a visitor searches for something described in your pages.
- The pages should load fast.
- The pages should be nice and pleacent to look at
- The visitors should bot be exhausted in their eyes or in their mind of looking at your pages.
- The language in your pages should be easy to understand.
- At least some of your main pages should be easy to access through cellphones with internet connections
B. How to fulfil the purposes
It is not easy to make a domain that optimally suits all these purposes at the same time. Here are however some concrete advices that will bring you a long way towards fulfilling the purposes:
- Your web should have a index page, called "index.html". From this page it should be possible to reach all other pages directly or indirectly through links, and come back again throug back-links.
- Design your web as a a tree structure. Your main page should contain a content chart with links to the other pages, and each of the other web pages should have a link back to your main page. It is most conveniant to let your index-page also be your main page. If yo have many pages, make the links at your main page go to pages with detailed charts, that then link from these to the detailed content pages. Such a tree structure is the absolutely best to let your pages be seen, indexed and presented by the search engines.
- If your index-page is not your main page with content chart, you must have a very visible link from your index-page to your main page and back. In this case you can let your indes-page present you and your company, and let it show featured products, services or information.
- As an althernative, you can make a frame page with a menu of the other pages that always shows up, and letting the other pages load into the main frame in the frame page. However, each of the individual pages should have a link pack to the frame page, so that the visitors can get to the beginning if he catches up the pages individually through a search engine. You shuold also have a chart somewhere with ordinary links to all your pages in your index page, even though you use a frame page. In this way you make it easy for the search engines to find your pages.
- Do not make too large pages. Your pages should ideally not be larger than 100 kb. If you have very much content, use a tree structure that branch out finely combined with smaller pages instead of a structure with simple branching and big pages. If you have many large pictures, it is important to divide these on several pages. Pages with many big pictures often load very slowly, and make your visitors go away.
- Make pages with a simple layout. Pages looking like a newpaper work well only for newspapers that the readers allready know well. Only on column with picture illustrations under each text section is simple and work well. If you use more than one column, one of the column should be for the text. The other or the other two should be for illustrations and menus. The principle of simplicity is becomming steadily more important as people steadily more access web-sites through cellphones.
- And advanced layout can give your web-site a professional look, and look fine, but make the page more difficult to read and understand for the visitor.
- Do not use authomatic fancy animations in your index pages or in pages with content charts. Absoloutely never make a page in such a way that it shows an animation or video before the rest of the page show up. All this will make the pages load very slowly. Many visitors will not take the time to let the animation finish either, and go away. Animations also seldome are so informative as one things. You can link to animations or videos from any pages if the animations have a special infomative purpose. The purpose of your pages shall however always be explained with simple text that is easily seen. Never try to force the visitor to look at a animation sequence to explain what your website is all about. This trick never works.
- Use colours. All grey/black/white pages are very depressing and very boring to look at. . Use the colours purpousful to distingwish different contents.
- Use colors with a good contrast against the background. Surpisingly many web builders let the text be in shady gray against a little brighter grey or white background. Probably they want the text to be pleasant to look at and avoid tiring the eyes of the visitor. Such text is however very difficult to distinguish, and the page will get boring to look at.
- The colours should however not be unpleasantl to look at. What is unpleasant and not, is difficult to define. Hwoever, some color tend to be unpleasant if they are very clear and bright, especially in the text, for example yellow, orange or pink. Any color will be unpleasant if it is extremely bright.
- Do not use too small letters and too big letters. Very small letters are difficult to read for many, and very big letters are disturbing. Titles shall have the biggest letters, ingresses or main explanations shall have smaller ones, and the main text the smallest.
- The font type used is very important for the readability of a web-page. A PC screen have a lot fewer pixels, or picture points than a printed paper. Therefore you must use fonts that are clearly distingwished even though the letters are small and consist of only a few pixels. Verdana is perhaps the best font type for small writing on a web page. This text uses Verdana. Times new roman, as in this line can also be used. For titles and ingresses with greater letters, you can use many more fonts for variation.
- Use a basic simple sentence structure, and words that you expect your vistors to understand.
- However, supply this basic structure with more advanced and specialized words, in order to pick up searches with these words from the search engines. You should hovever explained the more advanced consepts for your visitors.
